Changing Leaves, Cooler Temps and… Home Maintenance!

Cooler weather and changing leaves mean we have officially entered fall! It also means it’s the perfect time to tackle some important home maintenance tasks.

Here’s a quick list of 10 home maintenance tasks that I recommend every homeowner complete this fall:

1. Clean the Gutters and Downspouts. Clean out your gutters and downspouts to prevent water from backing up and causing damage to your roof and foundation.

2. Check the Roof. While you’re cleaning the gutters, take a few minutes to inspect your roof. Look for missing or damaged shingles and make any necessary repairs before winter hits. A small fix now could save you from a much larger problem later.

3. Seal Gaps and Cracks. Inspect your home’s exterior for gaps or cracks, especially around windows and doors. Sealing these up will keep the warm air inside and help lower your energy bills.

4. Service Your Heating System. Have a professional check your furnace or heating system. Regular maintenance will ensure it’s working efficiently and safely. Plus, you don’t want to be left in the cold with a broken heater in the middle of winter.

5. Inspect the Chimney and Fireplace. If you have a fireplace, make sure it’s clean and ready for use. A professional chimney sweep can clear out any debris or buildup to ensure your fireplace operates safely.

6. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors. With the heating system kicking on soon, it’s a good time to test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace any old batteries and ensure these life-saving devices are working properly.

7. Drain and Store Outdoor Hoses. Before the first freeze, disconnect and drain your garden hoses. Store them indoors to prevent any water left inside from freezing and damaging the hose or spigots.

8. Inspect Your Windows. Check for any signs of drafts or damaged seals. Replacing worn-out weather stripping or caulking can save you money on heating this winter.

9. Trim Trees and Shrubs. If you have trees or shrubs near your home, take the time to trim back any branches that could potentially cause damage during a winter storm. Fallen branches can harm your roof, siding, or power lines.

10. Check the Insulation. Proper insulation is key to keeping your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Fall is the perfect time to inspect your attic, walls, and basement to ensure you have adequate insulation.

Keeping up with regular home maintenance not only protects your investment but also helps prevent those little issues from turning into costly repairs down the road.

And trust me, I’ve seen firsthand how well-maintained homes are easier to sell, and they often sell for more. So whether you’re thinking about selling in the future or just want to take care of your home, fall is the perfect time to check a few key things off your to-do list.

If you have questions about home maintenance or are thinking about buying or selling a home, feel free to reach out! I’m always happy to help.

Let's Make It Happen!
